Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes

  • by

This Werner Herzog film from 1972 is categorized as adventure-drama and features Klaus Kinski as Don Lope de Aguirre.

Kinski was a key player in German film, especially back in the 1970s. He played Nosferatu twice, including in the Herzog remake of the 1922 silent film. He is also well known for his portrayal of Woyzeck in the 1979 film of the same name.

This film is loosely based on the true story of de Aguirre searching for the mythical El Dorado. Importantly, Herzog included and credited the local native population (as a group rather than by name) in the cast of this film. Many cast members are from Central and South America, as well as Portugal.

Not rated in the U.S., this film would unfortunately likely land an R rating due to a brief glimpse of nudity – a native woman is seen topless for a few seconds. She is introduced as a local person and it is very natural to have her appear this way. I would easily be able to be skipped.
