Wir sind jung. Wir sind stark.

This 2014 social drama is available on Netflix. It covers the events of 1992 in Rostock, during which xenophobic riots attacked Vietnamese refugees. Using a variety of film art techniques, this film can be analyzed on many levels.

Jonas Nay plays Stefan. As the main character in Deutschland 83/85/89, he may seem very familiar to many viewers. Devid Striesow is also in this cast – you can see more of him in Dann bin ich mal weg. Other familiar faces are Saskia Rosendahl, and Jakob Bieber.

Lien is played by Trang Le Hong, who was born in Vietnam. This was her first acting role. Many of her following roles have been in shorts, but Ostfriesisch für Anfänger is another of her full features. Other refugees are played by Mai Duong Kieu, also born in Vietnam, and Aaron Le, born in the Philippines.

This film deals explicitly with xenophobia, right extremism, and refugee crises from multiple perspectives (refugees, German youths, and German adults). With that, this film covers Families in Different Societies, Influce of Language and Culture on Identity, and Factors that Impact the Quality of Life very well.

This film is rated TV:MA. Trigger warning: suicide. There are some racist terms used, which are punished. We see and hear an aftermath, but not the action. There are some aggressive sexual motions made about 42 minutes in, but with everyone fully clothed and distracted by riots on the television. There is a moment of nudity (rear) about an hour and 8 minutes in. One hour and 33 minutes in there is a sex scene without nudity, but explicit in its own way.
