Trautmann

Rated 12 and up in Germany, this 2018 war drama is a UK/Germany production and as such the language does not always match the lips when played in German. (They opted to dub the English speakers in the German version of this film.) Soccer film fans may recognize this film under the title The Keeper. While it is based on a true story, many liberties were taken in the story line. You can read a quick summary of those here.

Our main character is played by Davis Kross, who was first seen in Hilfe! We also saw him in Krabat before he made his first international appearance in The Reader. He remains a busy actor, performing in both films and TV series. Butz Ulrich Bose was in the Rubinrot series, as well as Verbotene Liebe (in an era I experienced in Germany, even – his face is certainly well known to me!).

The film takes place toward the end of WWII and covers has a short comment on distinguishing the war criminals among the prisoners (around 15 minutes in). There are some great scenes with explicit conversations about what being a German meant to the English immediately following the war. These can all be enjoyed and educational as clips. It is likely too English-based to be used in its entirety in the classroom, but that is of course at your discretion.

The use of the dubbing will likely be distracting for some viewers. The English version seems to have all or most of the original German in place. Some early scenes include graphic sounds of death which may be disturbing for some viewers.
