Tom Sawyer

Released in 2011, this is a German adaptation of the famous Mark Twain novel, so most of you don’t need a plot summary…  I would hope!  Benno Fürmann plays Indianer Joe and Joachim Król is Muff Potter.  Both end up fitting their roles quite well, though I will say Indianer Joe was a bit of a stretch, and may cause some concern in a “black face” way in some districts. (They do not caricature the character in any way, but a white German guy playing a Native American does require some heavy and obvious-to-some makeup.)

If you know the Mark Twain story (or indeed most of the other adaptations of it), there aren’t many surprises in this film.  Overall, it’s enjoyable, though, and may be a fun way to do a cross-curricular lesson with the English department.
