This 2006 film in two parts is an adventure film with a theme of pirates in the 14th century. It is split into two parts, each an hour and a half long. Parts of this movie were filmed in Spain and some characters are dubbed into German. While the majority of the actors are from Germany, some are from Switzerland, Spain, Czech, and France.
Ken Duken plays Klaus Störtebeker. He’s been in several popular films, from Inglorious Basterds to Coming In, from 1 1/2 Ritter to Zweiohrküken. This film was one of his early features.
Gottfried John is another famous face in this film. He plays Caesar in Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar and can also be found in Golden Eye, Otto der Film, Lili Marleen, and many many more.
Frank Giering, whom I recognize from ProSieben Märchenstunde, plays Klaus’ friend Jan. He can also be seen in Jerry Cotton, Anatomie 2, and Freigesprochen. He unfortunately died in 2010 seemingly due to complications of alcohol poisoning.
While some of the cultural and historical elements may be somewhat accurate for the era and Störtebeker was a real and legendary pirate. That being said, many scenes in the first part are more film art than historical probability. For more of a pirate adventure focus, the second part starts much more in this realm. This is also the part that most of the legends seems to be about.
In the first part, there are two nude men walking away from the camera about 15 minutes in. They are very noticeable. About 10 minutes later a woman comes out of the bath.
