Nosferatu Phantom der Nacht (1979)

This Werner Herzog version of the classic 1922 Nosferatu (or, better stated, of Bram Stoker’s Dracula) features Klaus Kinski as Count Dracula.

Lucy Harker in this version is played by the Paris-born actress Isabelle Adjani. Her mother was German, so she grew up speaking German fluently. She is a successful French actress today.

The tragic young Jonathan Harker is played by Bruno Ganz, whose popular films are listed in the post Der Himmel über Berlin.

Walter Ladengast played Van Helsing. This was one of his final films, having begun his career in 1928 with silent film Unter den Laterne, which wasn’t released in the U.S. until 2014.

This version is rated PG in the U.S. and is available with either the German or an English soundtrack in region 1 DVD format. It stays very true to the silent film and the original story, which makes it an interesting study for film history. In this era of vampire films, many films were already reimagining the appearance of the vampire away from the rodent-like creature to more of a potentially seductive creature, so sticking with the original style is something that may of interest for those expecting a vampire film for the younger generation.
