Kästner und der kleine Dienstag

This 2016 historical drama is currently available on Amazon.

Kästner is played by Florian David Fitz, who we’ve seen and discussed already. Among the cast is also Katharina Lorenz, who we may recognize from her first film, Kammerflimmern; Marie Gruber, who is also in Babylon Berlin, Das Leben der Anderen, and Lila, Lila; Saskia Rosendahl, who started with Lore and most recently was in Babylon Berlin; and Martin Brambach, who can be found in Das Leben der Anderen as well as Goodbye, Lenin! Many of these actors can also be seen in The Reader.

You’ll see close ups of Deutsch Mark coins and German penmanship of the time. The school scenes show the issues of the time, where the authority figures destroy poetry popularizing pacifism and explain the characteristics of the Aryan race and call out a child as a “Halfling.” We see Kristalnacht from a bystander’s view.

The film begins with glimpses of nudity and there is some implied sexuality. About 1 hour and 11 minutes in, the teacher says the N word many times while talking about the differences in race.
