Jakob der Lügner

  • by

This 1975 film takes place in 1944 Poland in a Ghetto. It was remade in Hollywood with Robin Williams in 1999. It’s meant to be a comedy, but even the Robin Williams version is classified as drama. We meet Jakob as he is out and about after curfew.  He finds out about Russian advances and decides to fight the depression of the Ghetto by creating false radio broadcasts about further advances.

Even though this original version is an East German film, we know one of the actors – Armin Mueller-Stahl.  He has been in American movies and television since then, including Angels and Demons, The West Wing, even the American remake of this film.

I wouldn’t exactly classify this as a comedy, but it is much lighter than most other films set in the same time period.

This film is not rated in the U.S., though the 1999 remake is rated PG-13. It would probably land a low PG-13 as well, just due to the context of the war.
