In Tranzit

  • by

This 2008 movie was filmed in English in Russia.  It was released directly to DVD, and considerably earlier in Russia than anywhere else.

The film takes place in 1946 and follows German prisoners of war as they are brought to a female transit camp and their treatment there.

A couple of the Germans in this film are played by German actors – Thomas Kretschmann plays Max.  He’s been in many well-known films, including the Pianist, U-571, Valkyrie, and Der Untergang.  Daniel Brühl, who we already know from several of the reviewed films, plays Klaus. Many of the Russians are played by former USSR citizens, including Ingeborg Dapkunaite.  Her most famous film was Mission: Impossible.  In fact, this film is full of actors who are quite famous, if not in Hollywood, then in their home countries.  John Malkovich may be the most famous name to Americans.  It’s surprising with this cast that the film would go straight to DVD, but of course with little action, it was probably considered a less-than-popular war movie style that may have failed in the theaters.

Overall not a bad film.  Unfortunately not appropriate for most classroom settings due to nudity and sexuality essential to the story.
