In the Presence of Mine Enemies

  • by

This 1997 TV Movie takes place in 1942 in the ghetto in Warsaw.  German actor Armin Mueller-Stahl joins an international cast (Americans, Canadians, Romanians…) in this US production, which is rated PG-13.  This is a remake of the 1960 play Playhouse 90.

While not necessarily based on a true story, the uprising of the Jewish people in this ghetto happened in 1943 and some pieces of this film appear to be inspired by that event. The end of the movie comments on the uprising.

There was a great quote on hatred said by the German Captain Richter.  I am not finding it elsewhere and I don’t want to mistype it, but the gist of it was that every people needs someone to hate.  That hatred pushes out borders and brings the people together.  I find this quote to be the most thought-invoking statement in the movie. It requires us to take a look at history and take a look at our current situations.
