Herbert

This 2015 drama is currently available on Netflix.

Our star is Peter Kurth, whom we may recognize from Goodbye Lenin, Babylon Berlin, and Ein Freund von mir. He plays a former East German boxer, now bouncer. Kurth was born in East Germany, but didn’t begin acting until 1992, and his second role wasn’t until a decade later.

Next to Kurth is Lina Wendel, also from East Germany (East Berlin, in fact), she also began acting in the 1990s. Eddy is played by Edin Hasanovic, who was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, then Yugoslavia. He’s currently working on a new version of All Quiet on the Western Front (expected 2022), but can also be found in Amazon’s You are Wanted, Das Leben ist nichts für Feiglinge among many others.

Another cast member worth mentioning is Reiner Schöne. Born in East Germany, he escaped to the west in 1968. He’s been a busy actor since then (he did have a few roles prior to this), both in German and American movies and TV. He played a one-episode character in Star Trek: The Next Generation and a senator in (T)Raumschiff Surprise: Periode 1, other Sci-fis such as Babylon 5 and Sliders and westerns such as The Gunfighters and The Eiger Sanction, further comedies like Otto: Der Katastrophenfilm – really it’s a wonder we haven’t run across him yet in this blog!

Because the overall focus of the film is a major health concern and Herbert’s responses to its growing impact on his life, teachers may find clips useful in the realm of Contemporary Life (Health and Well-being) or Science and Technology (Healthcare and Scientific Research). There are other clips with a focus of Ethical Considerations, Relationships, and Self-Image as well.

There is non-sexual nudity about 7 minutes in. There are moments of stripping, excessive drinking, and violence. 52 minutes in there is brief nudity. An hour and 23 minutes in, there is further non-sexual nudity, and a sex scene follows about 4 minutes later. 10 minutes later non-sexual nudity again. (The non-sexual nudity all relates to his health and/or caring for him because of his health.)
