Hagazussa

This 2017 folk horror takes place in the 15th century Alps and has the dialect to go with it.

Most of the cast are not typically film or TV actors, with few having credits outside of this film. One notable exception is Haymon Maria Buttinger, who plays the Dorfpfarrer. Buttinger began his acting career in 1982 with Die Ausgesperrten. More recent credits include Sachertorte and Jud Süss – Film ohne Gewissen. He even had a small part in Schindler’s List.

This film may be interesting for German film courses. In brings in some preferences and skills we’ve seen in the art of German film over the last hundred years or so. It would not be appropriate for younger audiences, nor would it likely keep their attention due to its slower pace. There are moments of historically accurate racism and fear/hatred of witches. Other trigger warnings include death and sexual assault.
