Gloomy Sunday – ein Lied von Liebe und Tod

  • by

This film is a story of a love triangle, surrounding a pianist, a restauranteur, and a woman who once dreamed of and studied to become a concert vocalist. The film takes place during WWII, though this is not a detail of importance until later in the film.

There are a couple arguments between an SS officer and his secretary regarding spelling according to Duden. They are interesting clips for us teachers…

Joachim Król is one of the male leads. Król continues to be a busy actor, with four films in post-production, two in filming, and one in pre-production at the time of this post. Among his big-name films are: Lautlos, Der Krieger und die Kaiserin, Lola rennt, and Der bewegte Mann.

The female lead is played by Erika Marozsán. While most of her work is in Hungarian film and TV, she crosses into German film and TV well. We may recognize her from Jüd Süß – ein Film ohne Gewissen, for example.

There is nudity, as two of the main characters enter the bath and bathe together (this happens twice). This scene would be simple to edit out or skip. There is also a sex scene, which should be easy enough to skip as well.
