Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum

  • by

This film version of the Heinrich Böll novel, published only a year before the film was released. It is also the directorial debut of Margarethe von Trotta, who later went on to direct Rosenstraße.

In this film, we explore issues of terrorism, surveillance, individual rights, sensationalism within the media, and much more. These are all issues that appear globally even today, and as such may be important conversations to have.

Katharina Blum is played by Angela Winkler, who recently appeared in a recurring role in Dark.

The terrorist is played by Jürgen Prochnow, who is perhaps best known for his role in Das Boot. He’s keeping a busy schedule, which includes American TV shows like NCIS: Los Angeles and 24. In fact, it seems that if this generation of students recognizes him, it’ll be for his work with the American film and TV circles.

This film is rated R for nudity, the first instance of which happens about 15 minutes in, when the title character is forced to go through a strip search. The next doesn’t come until nearly 90 minutes in, during an autopsy.
