This 2008 drama-comedy stars well-known Michael “Bully” Herbig as Boandlkramer (Death). We follow a 70 year old as he begins seeing Death and how he handles interactions with him.
Other familiar faces are Lisa Maria Potthoff (Leberkäsjunkie) and Herbert Knaup (mentioned in six of our film write-ups here!).
This film is in Bavarian dialect and takes place in the mountains of Bavaria. As such, there are clips that may be interesting both linguistically and culturally as points of discussion.
Die Geschichte von Brandner Kaspar is a modern version of Das Tor zum Paradies, 1949. There was a 1975 version called Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewig’ Leben. The latter was the only labeled strictly “comedy,” whereas the other two are both marketed as “drama comedy.” Of course, centering on the topic of death leans into the drama aspect regardless.
For classes that are sensitive to alcohol abuse, it’s important to note that Boandlkramer is tricked by getting him drunk. He later is seen confused and with a hangover.
