Der Experte

  • by

This 1988 film is about a mechanic who is set up as an individual annoyed by politics, who loses his memory at the same time a political expert with the same first name loses his.

This film is more enjoyable with some basic understanding of German politics, as well as basic German abilities.  (For example, a bulletin goes from “Unser Weg” to missing the “unser” and looking like “Weg mit…”)

Dieter Hallenvorden, who plays our main character, is still acting today.  He lends his voice to Asterix und die Wikinger among other roles.

The comedy in this film is relatively old-school.  (Keep in mind, of course, that this film is from the 80s.)  It could be a fun way to broach the topic of politics, or lighten the atmosphere during or after a unit on politics.

Working with the mechanic is a young boy who hides from the cops, looks at women showering through binoculars, and reads Playboy magazines.  The nudity that is visible happens as he is looking through the binoculars. This part could be easily skipped.

Because of the very brief nudity, this film would be rated R were it to be rated in the U.S. It is rated 6 and up in Germany. I would recommend it more for the university level due to the advanced linguistic and cultural humour, though it could be useful in an advanced high school class as well.
