This 2008 film is an adaptation of the Thomas Mann novel by the same name. Wikipedia actually has a good article on this book, even in the English article. It’s a story not unlike Pride and Prejudice – a wealthy family wanting to stick with the aristocrats, one or two of the family members wanting to do something else, enjoy life, have fun.
Armin Mueller-Stahl plays our main character, Johann “Jean” Buddenbrook. Mueller-Stahl was born in 1930 in East Prussia, in an area which now belongs to Russia. After a few years away from movies, his most recent release came out in 2015, Knight of Cups. He’d been a very active actor for both TV and movies from 1956-2009. He was in the original Jakob der Lügner, and we also know him from English-language releases, such as 12 Angry Men, The Game, X-Files, and even the American version of Jacob the Liar. Interestingly, he also played Thomas Mann in a mini-series on the Mann family.
Christian Buddenbrook is played by August Diehl, an actor we know from Inglorious Basterds. He’s also in Salt, Anatomie 2, and many other highly talked-about films.
The brief nudity takes place with little warning near the beginning of the film, though could be edited out with care. Skipping may be more difficult.
