Berlin Calling

Currently available on Netflix, this 2008 film is a drama-comedy with a focus on music.

Quite a few of the actors in this film are very likely new to us. In fact, the star is Paul Kalkbrenner, who is mainly a musician. But Corinna Harfouch is most probably a familiar face. She was in Deutschland 89, Fack ju Göhte 3, a couple Bibi Blocksberg films, and der Untergang among many many others. Another famous face is Peter Schneider, whom we’ve seen in Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex, Lila Lila, and recently the Netflix series Dark. There are other familiar faces as well, but much smaller roles. I’ll let you enjoy the surprise!

There’s nothing super educational in this film, apart from the music scene itself. I see no useable clips to recommend for a classroom, but may be good listening comprehension practice for mature audiences who enjoy the rave scene.

About 3 minutes in, there are a couple scantily clad women dancing. Just after that, a couple is lying in bed naked. There is drug use throughout (this is part of the larger plot of the film). There is a sex scene in the club about 17 minutes in. There is another sex scene about 49 minutes in, which is immediately followed by an image of two nude women. This scene continues until 53 minutes in. 16 minutes later there is another sex scene at a party.
