Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland

  • by

While it’s not based on a true story, this 2011 film is a humorous look at Turkish immigration to Germany and the integration of the children of those immigrants.  As you can imagine, there are a lot of cultural stereotypes one might come across when moving from a traditionally Muslim country to a traditionally Christian country.  We learn about some of these ideas in the form of flashbacks and dream sequences as we get to know the family of the present day: grandpa (the original immigrant), grandma, their three children, and the cousins who grew up in Germany.

This movie is appropriate for students and has many great talking points.  It’s a great way to introduce the idea of other cultures, especially for students who might not have an opportunity to see much diversity otherwise. There are a great deal of materials on the market for the German classroom already, so if you’re looking to include formal lessons with this, you shouldn’t have to recreate the wheel.
