7 Zwerge: Männer allein im Wald

  • by

This spoof on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 2004.  Otto Waalkes, Martin Schneider, Nina Hagen and her daughter Cosma Shiva Hagen, Atze Schröder, and many many other German comedians came together to make this movie as humorous as it could possibly be.  We learn a backstory of the dwarves that explains why there are no women in their forest, and how the queen ended up taking power.

Most of the humour is physical, so it’s enjoyable regardless of level of German.  It’s an amusing alternative to the real story (or the Disney one, for that matter).

I don’t recommend watching this film with subtitles (the English swears are much worse than the German ones). The humor remains around a PG-13 level, similar to the live action Cat in the Hat. Some classes notice the play on words, which includes the N-word, but it can be used as a linguistic teachable moment, and it goes over well in my classes.

This film is followed up by 7 Zwerge: Der Wald ist nicht genug, which will have its own post.
