This 1998 film won the Deutscher Filmpreis 1999 and is based on a true story. It was August Diehl’s first film role and he plays our main character. Alongside him is Fabian Busch, whom we recently saw in a major role in Er ist wieder da.
The beginning of this film begins with images and scenes of important history – Reagan and Gorbachev speaking, for example. It shows the anarchist movement and the generational divide surrounding it. It goes into the lives of these young people as computer hackers who are conspiracy theorists, tracing evidence of the Illuminati. Although seen through his drug-fueled conspiracies, scenes covering important world events of 1985 and 1986 are shown, including the Chernobyl disaster. As with many other films based on true stories, there are updates for the main players at the end of the film.
This film is rated 12 and up in Germany due to mild language and drug use. After some time, the drug use is viewed as a problem and the friend attempts to get him to stop. There is also a closeup of a man’s rear end about 55 minutes in.
